Hong Kong, a prosperous metropolis built on a desolate land 100 years ago, was once a British colony and returned to China in 1997. Under Beijing's so-called "one country, two systems" arrangement, Hong Kong once enjoyed freedom of speech, assembly and the press that was different from the mainland. A land that once enjoyed civil liberties.
But under Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the Communist Party is reluctant to let the people of Hong Kong continue to lead free lives. In the eyes of the CCP, free Hong Kong people are unwilling to be enslaved by the Communist Party, and even anti-government protests broke out in 2019, when the CCP came up with the so-called National Security Law. With harsh controls on Hong Kong that disregard human rights, the CCP is trying to turn Hong Kong into another big city of the kind that is common in the mainland.
A judge of the Hong Kong High Court recently sentenced democracy activist Tang Yingjie to nine years in prison on charges of secession and terrorist activities. This is complete political persecution, and the Chinese National Security Law is to deprive Hong Kong people of their freedom.
